Wednesday interview: Sarah Goodreau

Sarah Goodreau is freelance illustrator from Amsterdam. She does lovely illustration and here is her answers for our blog:

Have you always wanted to become an artist?
yes, for as far back as i can remember i have known that i wanted to be an artist. i was always the child with a pencil in her hand. it never really made sense to pursue anything else.

Which project has given you the most satisfaction?
I'm always very pleased with each new project i get to work on, especially when i am given the reins stylistically and can go wild.  but i think one of my favorites (so far) was designing greeting cards for hallmark. it was like a tiny childhood dream come true.
What types of books are on your bedside table?

ah, my favorite question! i have a steady rotation of books i keep by my bed. lately it's been One Hundred Years of Solitude ( Gabriel Garcia Márquez) and the Yage Letters (William S. Burroughs & Allen Ginsberg). I also keep my 2 favorite anthologies nearby. Moomin (Tove Jansson) and Krazy Kat (George Herriman)

What is the best moment of the day?

i think my best moment of the day is at the very beginning of the evening. when there is a lowering sun and i have just wrapped up my work for the day. i can have a glass of wine and get some reading or writing done.
Who is your art/illustration  hero at the moment?

this is such a hard question! i feel like i'm inspired by so many great artists and designers of the past and present. plus my friends are all so talented and watching them work so hard for their dreams is a huge inspiration for me.

 Cat or dog?
a tough decision! I've had cats my entire life, but right now i have a very sweet little dog. i guess i like cats that act like dogs and dogs that act like cats.

What would be your dream project?
my dream project would be to write and illustrate my own book. my own words and my own drawings. i'm working really hard on making that happen.

Where could we find you on Friday night?
with friends at a little cafe on a canal in Amsterdam.

If you could do any other job what would you choose and why?
i think i would be a sailor. i really love the sea.

Pepsi or Coke?
coke, i think?

If you were a character from Star Wars, which one would you be?
han solo because i like renegades.

How would you define your personal work/personal life balance in terms of ratio (50/50 70/30 etc)?
i want to say 60/40, but that may change with the seasons.

What brings you joy?
dear friends, sweet animals, a good record, making art and the moon.

  1. I really like her playful illustrations! It's almost a kind of naive art style. Thanks for the introduction!
